Big Mountain Glossary
Big Mountain AKA Freeride, Off Piste, Steeps, Alpine…
This world has it’s own whole set of terms and specific language. If you want to decipher some of these, check out the Big Mountain Glossary on the Teaching Steeps page.
Snow School Terms
Split
A divide or difference in the group in ability or rate of learning. There are many tactics you can use when you have a split, whether on the magic carpet or up the mountain. Talk to your peers and supervisors if you’re out of ideas!
Pitch
How steeps a slope is. It could just be a small section of a run “the pitch is steeper on the left” or a whole section “a long flat pitch great for…”
Side Hit
An unofficial jump made naturally on the side of a run. When picked correctly, these can be great learning tools outside of the Terrain Park. However, always be aware of the take off, landing and run out, as well as an obstacles within the side-hit as these are not maintained. You should never be doing side hits in Slow Zones or Flow Zones. Be aware of your surroundings.
Mileage
To get mileage refers to practicing and consolidating a skill you have been working on. Sometimes referred to as “guided mileage” which suggests picking appropriate terrain to enable consolidation to happen. Sometimes our students start overthinking what we’re teaching them and doing some guided mileage with them and allowing them to reflect on what they’ve been taught is a great tactic in a lesson (particularly when fatigue hits!) Too much mileage and not enough assessment and development however doesn’t offer our guests the best out of our Snow School, as they’re here to learn from you!
Maze
The metal fences that create the lift line queue. This is where people line up to get the chair or gondola.
Bibs
Children 6 and under wear a vest which identifies them as being in a lesson. There is a handle on the back - not for picking your students up with - but to assist the lift attendant in helping you load small children. Bibs must be worn from the moment the child arrives right up until they are signed out by a parent or guardian at the end of the day.
flaik
The red GPS devices all students 18 and under are required to wear in all Snow School lessons. This allows you to find a separated student and allows families to relive their day on the flaik website and see where they went. We also use the flail website for signing up for training. Find out more about this here.
Slide for Life
When snow conditions are ‘slide for life’ that means that it’s firm (icy, hard packed or chalky) and if you or a guests fall they’ll be sliding a looooooong way. This is an environmental consideration you must take into account in your decision making when taking clients around the mountain.
